Phase I - 1998 In 1998 ECW staff began to assess one of the smaller rivers within its watershed - New River. The initial assessment began in June and was completed by September. The majority of rivers within ECW's watershed area were historical salmon spawning runs. This study looked at the feasibility of enhancing the river to once again maintain Atlantic Salmon. During the assessment staff looked at such water parameters as pH, Dissolved Oxygen, temperature, flow, depth and length. The riparian zone was assessed for future needs of vegetation establishment. River bottoms (sediments) were assessed for spawning areas as well as current species assessments. Phase II in 1999 will see recommendations in the final assessment report carried out. Phase II - 1999 Trees were donated by JDI Woodlands and planted along the riverbanks in areas where high water temperatures and low dissoved oxygen levels were indicated. Phase III - 2000 In the summer of 2000 the survey of Pocologan will be completed, a follow up of New River will be implemented and Lepreau River will be surveyed and remediation recommendations if any indicated. The water quality will be assessed using pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and an Asterisk B series parameters. |
