Field Trips  
 
1. On May 10th, Eastern Charlotte Waterways Inc. provided students from Grade 5 (St. George Elementary) that had been involved in the Sky Watchers Program with a field trip to Environment Canada's Atmospheric Branch in Fredericton. Students were given a tour of the facility and given the opportunity to see how their daily data is used.  
2. On May 17th, students from Grade 7 (Fundy Hight School) were taken to the Southwest Solid Waste Commission to be given a tour of the facility. Students were provided with information regarding recycling, on site composting and the water filter and reuse system.  
 
Gulf of Maine Institute without Walls  
 
This summer the Gulf of Maine Institute without Walls (GMIWW) , in partnership with the Southwest Regional School Board (SWRSB) and the Tusket River Environmental Protection Association (TREPA) hosted a a four day summer institute entitled the Gulf of Maine Institute without Walls Canadian Maritime Millennium Initiative. This four day institute will bring together students and teachers from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachussets to share projects, experiences, cultures and much more.  
 
The main goals of the GMIWW are for students to:
  • share their work and learn about others work
  • to learn about the GMIWW
  • to get to know each other
  • to develop common projects
  • to make new friendships
  • to have fun
  • to leave feeling motivated to work on their local and common Gulf of Maine projects.

 
 
Gulf of Maine Council Summer Event  
 
On Monday, July 17th, students that have participated in the Summer Institute will travel, via the Scotia Prince Ferry, to Portland, Me. and then travel on to Portsmouth, NH where they will spend the night. On Tuesday, July 18th will participate in a full day of events including a trip to Star Island, a scavenger hunt, hiking tide pooling and a visit to the Cornell University Marine Labs. On the same day the children will arrive in Portsmouth for a Fish banks game and pizza with members of the council at the Urban Forestry Center. The children will spend the night and present to the Gulf of Maine Council the following morning.
